Sleeping on a Ship Before My Cruise: A Night Aboard the Queen Mary

I’m going on a cruise next week… but I’m sleeping on a ship BEFORE I even board my cruise ship!

Not just any ship, either. I’m spending the night aboard the legendary Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.

This beauty made her maiden voyage in 1936, carrying celebrities, royalty, and passengers across the Atlantic in an era when ocean travel was glamorous.

Then World War II came along. She traded luxury for military duty, earned the nickname “The Grey Ghost,” and transported more than 800,000 military personnel during the war.

She retired in 1967 and has been permanently docked in Long Beach ever since.

Today, she’s a floating hotel with original Art Deco details, historic staterooms, beautiful lounges, restaurants, and tours that take you back through her incredible history.

And apparently… a few ghosts who never checked out.

She’s docked right beside the Long Beach cruise terminal, so Sunday morning I get the photo I didn’t know I needed: cruising in 1936 next to cruising in 2026, in the same frame.

I’m excited to see what it’s REALLY like spending the night aboard a 90-year-old ocean liner. Is it elegant? Is it creepy? Does it feel like stepping back into the 1930s?

I’ll be sharing the rooms, the ship, and my experience before heading off on my cruise.

Would YOU sleep aboard the Queen Mary, or would the ghost stories send you straight to a regular hotel?
