You can look at two Galveston cruises, see the same familiar Western Caribbean ports, and think, “Well, those are basically the same trip.”
Then you get to the sea days. π
And THAT is where things get interesting.
Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas and Carnival Jubilee both offer Western Caribbean itineraries visiting Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan. The port order, time in port and exact docking location can differ by sailing.
Jubilee also offers other itineraries from Galveston, including an 8-night Bahamas cruise. But we’re comparing the Western Caribbean runs here.
Here’s where I lean right off the bat.
If Broadway musicals, aqua shows and ice skating productions sound like your kind of entertainment, I’m leaning Symphony.
If casual food, comedy and a good mix of onboard activities sound more like your vacation, I’m leaning Jubilee.
Not a rule. Just where I’d start.
And one thing up front: this is a planning comparison, not a firsthand Symphony review or a judgment of every ship in either fleet.
Morning: Coffee or Chaos?
Symphony has FlowRider, a zip line and The Perfect Storm waterslides.
Jubilee has WaterWorks and SportSquare, plus BOLT, its roller coaster at sea.
WaterWorks and SportSquare offer included activities. BOLT costs extra.
Now, some people see all those activities and immediately start planning their day.
Others are thinking, “Cristi, I’m getting coffee and finding a chair.”
Both are perfectly acceptable vacation plans. π
The question isn’t which ship has the flashiest attraction. It’s which one has things your group will actually enjoy.
Lunch: Now We’re Talking
Jubilee brings Guy’s Burger Joint and Big Chicken to the included casual dining lineup.
Symphony has Sorrento’s Pizza, Park Cafe and Windjammer.
This is where personal preference matters.
Some people want to grab a burger and keep moving. Others want a buffet where everybody can find something different.
And some families just want to get everybody fed without turning lunch into a committee meeting.
I’m a big believer in looking at where you’ll actually eat, not counting restaurants like we’re collecting baseball cards.
A ship can have a dozen choices, but if you only want three of them, those are the ones that matter.
Afternoon: Two Very Different Ships
Symphony has distinct neighborhoods, including Central Park and the Boardwalk.
Jubilee uses six zones, including Currents and The Shores.
Both offer plenty to explore, but the layouts and atmosphere are different.
I like a ship where I can wander around, discover something interesting and eventually remember where I was going in the first place. π
Think about how you spend an ordinary afternoon at sea.
Are you exploring? Finding activities? Sitting somewhere people-watching? Meeting up with everybody for the next adventure?
That’s the kind of stuff that makes a sea day enjoyable.
Evening: This Is the Big One
For me, this is where Symphony really gets my attention.
Symphony’s entertainment includes:
- Hairspray, the Broadway musical
- HiRO at the AquaTheater
- 1977, an ice skating production
That’s three completely different kinds of entertainment on one ship.
Jubilee takes a different approach with Punchliner comedy, Playlist Productions and Center Stage entertainment.
And I love comedy. Give me a good comedian and I’m happy.
So this one really comes down to what kind of evening you want.
Show schedules, availability and fares can vary by sailing, so compare the actual departures you’re considering.
So Which Would I Book?
If entertainment is your biggest priority, especially Broadway, aqua and ice shows, I’d start with Symphony.
If you’re more interested in grabbing casual food, catching comedy and enjoying a variety of activities throughout the day, I’d start with Jubilee.
Neither is automatically the better vacation.
I’d compare similar dates, comparable cabins and the total price with the extras you actually want.
Because a cheap cruise isn’t necessarily a better deal if the other ship has more of what you’ll enjoy.
Same familiar ports. Two very different ways to spend your sea days.
And that’s why I wouldn’t choose between these two based on the itinerary alone.
Which sounds more like you? Broadway and aqua shows, or burgers and comedy?
