Our cruise stop in Progreso took us to Celestún for flamingos, a boat ride through the mangroves, and beach views. And let me tell you, it was a LONG day!
I came home with a lot of photos and videos. Some turned out great, some were a little shaky, and some reminded me that filming from a moving boat is harder than it looks. But they captured a day that gave us a different view of Mexico beyond the cruise port.
Seeing the Flamingos in Celestún
The flamingos were one of the highlights of our excursion. There’s something special about seeing them out on the water in their natural surroundings.
Getting the perfect photo wasn’t always easy. Between the boat moving and the birds doing their own thing, I took plenty of shots before getting a few I liked. My favorite is the close-up featured here. It brings back that moment much better than a distant view could.
Wildlife sightings can vary, so go ready to enjoy the whole experience rather than expecting a particular photo.
A Boat Ride Through the Mangroves
The mangroves deserve their own spot in the story. Moving from open water into the greenery gave us a completely different view, with tangled roots, branches, and reflections all around us.
I kept trying to capture everything: the flamingos, the water, the mangroves, and the ride itself. It was hard to fit the whole day into one video, which is why I’m sharing a few favorite moments here instead.
Beach Views to Round Out the Day
Our Celestún memories also include the beach and the waterfront. Looking back through the footage, those views help tell the full story of the excursion.
The flamingos may have been the main attraction, but the combination of wildlife, mangroves, and beach scenery made the day memorable.
What to Consider Before Choosing This Excursion
This was a full day, so think about how you like to spend your time in port. If you enjoy boat rides, wildlife, and exploring outdoors, a Celestún excursion may appeal to you. If you’d rather have a relaxed day closer to the ship, another Progreso excursion might be a better fit.
Before booking, check the total excursion length, transportation time, what’s included, and the return schedule. Bring sun protection and keep your phone or camera secure while you’re on the boat.
And give yourself permission to put the camera down sometimes. You don’t have to capture every second to enjoy it!
